The Others

Siba Al-Harez

A nameless young university student in Saudi Arabia has no contact with men outside her family, so when the charming Dai seduces her, her feelings of guilt are overwhelmed by the need for intimacy.

Dai introduces her to a secret world of lesbian parties and love affairs, and it’s here that she meets Darin and falls in love for the first time. But it becomes too much for her to bear and she eventually starts dating men online.

In the end she agrees to marry, leaving us with an ambiguous promise of future happiness, as well as a powerful sense of foreboding.

A truly explosive portrayal of life for young women in Saudi Arabia.

'Written with a wry, lively intelligence, intellectual curiosity and a passionate lyrical style, the novel['s] ... claustrophobic setting and exquisite eroticism simultaneously drain and exhilarate.'

Excerpts
Very few, indeed fewer than few, are those who have broken my private law, breached my private space. Yet over time, the lower floors of me have transformed themselves into a human garbage dump, trash piling up inside. Other people become corpses that loiter within me and turn to rot.
