Reviews

'A gripping read. The political and personal themes are delicately interconnected in an engaging epic style. This is a fascinating and cinematic novel written from the gut.'
Independent

'Extraordinarily evocative.'
BBC, London

'An epic which shows that events will always create their own momentum, that atrocities, even if brushed under the carpet and condemned to oblivion, will invariably surface and cry out ... The characters are masterfully drawn and elicit immense empathy from the reader.'
Moris Farhi

'Not since Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago and the works of Kundera has a novel seemed as moving and as indispensable.'
Voir

'A penetrating examination of man's inhumanity to man. This strangely fascinating novel is hard to put down.'
The Ottawa Citizen

'A broad, meaty adventure and a sharp reminder of the eternal stupidity of ethnic hatred ... Too few authors, in these cool, cynical, ,minimalist days, attack books of this scope.'
National Post

'Armenia's Gone With the Wind saga of the 20th century's first ethnic slaughter is a page-turner.'
The Gazette (Montreal)

'Agop Hacikyan's gripping novel ... is not only a great read, but is a wake-up call to the truth of the 20th century's first racial cleansing.'
The Examiner (Quebec)

Excerpts
Tomas was runing full speed. He was late for school. He stopped when he reached the rusty lamppost at the end of the street. He dropped his school bag onto the pavement, touched the metal pillar with his left hand, circled it three times, picked up the mud-smudged school bag once again and galloped off faster than before.
