Mohamed Choukri was born in Morocco in 1935. He was one of North Africa's most controversial and widely read authors. After deciding to learn to read and write classical Arabic at the age of twenty, he penned numerous works, including For Bread Alone (Telegram). He went on to become a teacher and writer, and was Chair of Arabic Literature at Ibn Batutu College in Tangier.

'Choukri is a powerful teller of stories. His telling of oppression is vivid and remarkable.' Morning Star
Excerpts
Reading and writing had become a sleeping and waking obsession with me. Sometimes I imagined myself as a big letter or as a pen. On occasion I didn't have the price of a new exercise book, so I picked up paper off the street and wrote my lessons on that. Sometimes it was paper which previously had shurus wrapped in it and the writing would disappear in patches of grease ... words arranged strangely, here and there. I used to enjoy the way these patterns appeared on the sheet.
