Lebanese Writers

During the mid-1960s Lebanese women writers wrote on the margins of the literary scene. A decade later, with the outbreak of civil war in 1975 gave a sense of urgency to the message of Lebanese women. Not surprisingly, it had as its focus the brutal realities of experiences amid the protracted conflict and escalating violence.

Today, in post-war Lebanon, women authors open up experimental spaces where artistic expression is less constrained by the cannon of the male-dominated domain. Young women writers dare to differ from the earlier forms.

The selections in this anthology bring together stories from established authors as well as promising young student writers. Together they cover a wide range of narrative approaches, themes and languages. They share with us their experiences in a dynamic, fast changing multicultural society.
