'A sort of absurdist, amoral fable ... Over time I grew rather fond of the conceited young rogue. There is something exquisitely tragic about Water's life, a repetitive parade of posh restaurants, press views and disinterested flings. Ultimately, he's a tad boring - not something you could say about the novel he stars in.'

'Hilarious reading ... Joffe, like his protagonist, is a rambunctious and successful young artist, with work in the Saatchi collection, and as his protagonist delivers one bombastic statement after another - "painting is not dead, it has just begun. When things are referred to as dead comes the point of greatest freedom" and "why waste your life never having used a bit more colour?" - it's hard not to like him.'
